BioSam Tyler is the Detective Chief Inspector of the Greater Manchester Police Force in the year 2006; after being hit head-on by a car, however, he wakes up in the year 1973. Here he is a DI, recently relocated from C Division in Hyde to the Greater Manchester police department- what will later become his own station in 2006. While he is initially convinced that his situation cannot be real, he is soon forced to accept that he has to adopt to policing in the year 1973, which is considerably different than what he is used to. Even now, however, he is unsure whether he has gone insane, is in a coma, or has actually gone back in time. He often suffers nightmares and hears voices or sounds that suggest that it is a coma that he is unable to wake from. This occasionally leads him to rash actions, as he is convinced that they are the only way to force his mind to wake.
Sam is a man deeply driven by the need for justice, to discover the truth in any situation. He believes in strictly by-the-book policing, which often comes into conflict with the methods of his station, which are of a distinctly 'hit first, ask later' mentality. He has shown himself, in several situations, willing to sacrifice the well-being of his team in the name of justice.
Sam would like to add not to listen to DCI Hunt when he says that Sam thinks he knows everything. He's just being a smartarse.
